Cupping therapy is an ancient practice rooted in Eastern medicine that is experiencing renewed popularity today.
Used for centuries in Chinese Massage, cupping therapy is increasingly sought after by people looking for a natural approach to wellness, relaxation, and physical recovery.
Once mainly associated with traditional Asian healing practices, cupping is now integrated into various therapeutic and massage approaches, both for general well-being and sports recovery. In Montpellier, cupping massage is appreciated for its effects on muscle tension, blood circulation, and deep relaxation.
Cupping Therapy in Chinese Massage: Why It Works and Who Can Benefit
What Is Cupping Therapy?
Cupping therapy involves placing cups on the skin to create a gentle suction effect. This suction softly lifts the skin and underlying tissues into the cup, helping to stimulate blood circulation, release muscle tension, and support the body’s natural self-regulation processes.
Dry Cupping Therapy
Dry cupping is considered the gentlest form of cupping therapy and is particularly suitable for those seeking a non-invasive approach. The cups are usually left in place for 20 to 30 minutes to help stimulate blood circulation, support the body’s natural detoxification processes, release muscular tension, and promote recovery.
Dry cupping is especially appreciated by people experiencing tension in the back, shoulders, or neck, athletes in need of muscle recovery, as well as anyone looking to discover a gentle and non-invasive introduction to cupping therapy.
Wet Cupping (or Hijama)
Wet cupping therapy, also known as Hijama in some traditions, combines suction cupping with very light, superficial micro-incisions. After an initial cupping session, small incisions are made on the skin, followed by a second application of the cups to draw out a small amount of blood.
Wet cupping may help improve certain skin conditions (such as acne or eczema), support the immune system, and provide relief in some cases of chronic pain, migraines, or circulation-related disorders.
Fire Cupping Therapy
Fire cupping is the form of cupping therapy I most frequently use in Chinese Massage in Montpellier. Fire cupping is a traditional technique that uses heat to create a suction effect inside glass cups. A flame is briefly introduced into the cup to warm the air, then removed before the cup is quickly applied to the skin. As the air cools, it creates a vacuum that gently draws the tissues upward.
This method combines the effects of cupping with heat, promoting muscle relaxation and improving circulation.
It is often used for people experiencing significant muscle stiffness, chronic tension, or those seeking a more traditional and warming approach to cupping massage.
Cupping Massage Therapy
Very commonly used in my Chinese Massage practice in Montpellier, this type of cupping involves gently gliding the cups over the skin. This makes it closer to a deep tissue massage technique rather than a static cupping application.
It combines the effects of suction with the benefits of a relaxing massage, offering an approach that is both therapeutic and enjoyable.
Flash Cupping Therapy
This method involves repeatedly placing and quickly removing the cups in a rapid sequence. Flash cupping is used to stimulate the skin and muscles, quickly improve circulation, and release tension in targeted areas without leaving the cups in place for long periods. This technique is particularly suitable for people who are sensitive to prolonged cupping, who bruise easily, or who prefer a lighter approach to cupping massage.
Silicone Cupping Therapy
Silicone cups are soft and flexible, unlike glass or rigid models. This technique provides a gentle massage, helps promote lymphatic drainage, may improve the appearance of the skin, and supports recovery after physical exertion.
Elle est particulièrement adaptée aux personnes ayant une peau sensible ou à celles intéressées par les soins esthétiques.
Do Cupping Therapy Treatments Hurt?
Contrary to common belief, a cupping session should not be painful. The cups create a suction sensation that can sometimes feel intense, but it is generally comfortable and well tolerated.
Who Can Benefit from Cupping Massage in Montpellier?
Cupping massage can be beneficial for many people, particularly in cases of muscular tension, chronic pain, or as part of a global wellness approach. However, there are also certain situations in which this practice is not recommended.
Relief of Muscular Pain and Tension
The suction effect helps release tight muscles, improve flexibility, and reduce discomfort. Its pain-relieving action on everyday aches (such as back pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, etc.) makes it a valuable support in managing muscular tension and soreness.
By stimulating blood circulation in painful areas, cupping therapy promotes better muscle recovery and helps reduce inflammation, which is particularly beneficial for athletes and people with intense physical or professional activity.
Improved Circulation
Dry cupping improves blood circulation by enhancing the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to deeper tissues. It helps speed up recovery, reduce swelling, and decrease sensations of numbness or tingling. It is particularly useful in cases of fatigue, poor circulation, or slow recovery.
Lymphatic Drainage
Cupping therapy stimulates the lymphatic system and supports the body’s natural elimination of waste. It can help reduce feelings of heaviness, promote digestive comfort, and improve overall vitality.
Cupping therapy is often used as part of a wellness and “detox” support approach.
Elimination of External Pathogenic Factors
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), cupping therapy helps expel pathogenic factors such as wind, cold, heat, and dampness. It is often used in cases of colds, muscle aches, heat exhaustion, or respiratory discomfort, in order to restore balance and promote the circulation of energy (Qi).
Relaxation and Stress Reduction
Cupping therapy is used as a natural stress-management technique. It helps soothe the nervous system, reduce tension, and promote a deep state of relaxation. The suction effect releases contracted muscles and creates an overall sense of ease, often experienced as both physical and mental relief after the session.
It may also help improve sleep quality by reducing bodily tension and encouraging deeper relaxation.
Cupping is particularly suitable for people experiencing stress, anxiety, or sleep disturbances.
Overall Well-being and Immune System Support
A cupping treatment improves circulation and helps reduce stress, which naturally supports the body’s immune defenses. It also helps promote balance and vitality, with a positive effect on energy levels and daily concentration.
Cupping application is popular during seasonal transitions to help harmonize Qi.
Contraindications to Cupping Therapy
Cupping therapy is not recommended in cases of infected or burned skin, after surgery, in the presence of a skin graft, or for individuals undergoing anticoagulant treatment or suffering from heart conditions. It is generally not advised for pregnant women, children under 10 years old, or elderly individuals.
Cupping Therapy (Ventousotherapy) and Traditional Chinese Medicine
Cupping Therapy or Tuina Massage: What’s the Difference?
Tuina is a traditional Chinese massage that is performed fully clothed or covered with a sheet. Depending on the needs, oils may be used to enhance the treatment.
Tuina Massage
This ancestral massage technique that I practice in Montpellier is based on a variety of methods, including deep pressure, mobilisations, stretches, rubbing, percussion, and vibration. It allows for effective work on:
- muscular and joint pain
- stress and fatigue
- sleep disorders
- recovery and athletic performance
- digestive disorders
The sensations can be deep, but relaxation gradually sets in, often leaving a feeling of lightness, relaxation, and vitality after the session.
Depending on your needs, Chinese cupping therapy can also be combined with a Chi Nei Tsang abdominal massage session.
Foot reflexology, integrated into my Chinese energetic therapy treatments in Montpellier, can also be combined with cupping therapy to provide a fully personalised treatment tailored to your needs.
Tuina Massage with Chinese Cupping Therapy
During a Tuina massage in Montpellier, cupping therapy is generally used at the end of the session.
Unlike Tuina, which works through deep pressure and mobilisations to release tension, cupping works through suction: the tissues are drawn outward, helping to decompress them.
These almost opposing actions allow for a complete treatment by:
- mobilising the fascia tissues
- releasing tissue adhesions
- stimulating local circulation
The sensations are also different:
- Tuina: deep pressure, structural work, gradual and targeted release
- Cupping: a pulling sensation, more diffuse release, and a feeling of space and lightness
Tuina and cupping therapy are therefore complementary: Tuina prepares and deeply relaxes the body, while cupping extends the release and promotes a restored sense of circulation.
What Do the Different Cupping Colors Reveal About Your Health?
The marks left by Chinese cupping therapy can range from light pink to dark purple. They provide indications about the condition of the tissues, local circulation, and areas of tension or stagnation in the body. These marks usually fade within a few days.
Light pink: smooth circulation and absence of stagnation
Light pink marks are the mildest. They generally indicate good circulation and little to no stagnation, but in Traditional Chinese Medicine they may also suggest a Blood deficiency. They usually fade quickly.
Dark red: mild inflammation and release of tension
Dark red marks may reflect an area of tension or mild inflammation. They often appear when recent blockages have been released and circulation is reactivated in the treated area.
Dark purple / dark blue: long-standing stagnation and deep tension
Dark purple or dark blue marks often indicate more long-standing stagnation and deeper tension. They may be associated with slowed circulation or areas of chronic tightness.
Reddish-purple: imbalance between heat, cold, and stagnation
Reddish-purple marks appear when several imbalances coexist, such as stagnation combined with cold or heat. They may indicate reduced circulation and more “congested” tissues.
Bluish-purple: cold-type stagnation and slowed circulation
Bluish-purple marks are often associated with stagnation linked to cold or dampness in Traditional Chinese Medicine. They frequently appear in areas of long-standing pain or poor circulation.
Cupping Therapy and Moxibustion: What’s the Difference?
Cupping and moxibustion are two traditional Chinese medicine techniques used to improve circulation, relieve pain, and rebalance Qi, but their approaches are different.
- Cupping uses cups that create suction on the skin in order to activate Qi and Blood, dissolve stasis/stagnation, and eliminate pathogenic factors. It is mainly indicated for muscular pain and deep tension, or during seasonal transitions to harmonize Qi.
- Moxibustion involves warming acupuncture points using mugwort (moxa) in order to warm the body, stimulate Qi, and disperse internal cold. It is often used in cases of fatigue, digestive disorders, or imbalances related to cold.
Cupping works through suction and tissue mobilization, whereas moxibustion works through heat.
Cupping Therapy and Gua Sha: What’s the Difference?
Cupping and Gua Sha are two TCM techniques aimed at improving circulation and relieving tension, but their methods differ.
- Cupping uses cups that create suction to release deep muscular tension, improve circulation, and promote recovery. It is mainly used on the back, shoulders, and legs.
-
Gua Sha (Gua = to scrape; Sha = illness) involves scraping the skin with a tool to stimulate superficial circulation and release local tension. It is more commonly used for neck pain, respiratory discomfort, as well as facial aesthetic treatments.
Cupping works more deeply, whereas Gua Sha is more superficial.
Cupping Therapy and Sports Massage in Montpellier: Recovery, Performance, and Muscle Relaxation
Benefits of Cupping Therapy for Athletes
Cupping therapy is increasingly used by athletes to improve performance, relieve pain, and support better recovery. This ancient technique offers several benefits that are particularly valuable in the context of physical activity.
Reduction of Muscular Tension and Pain
Athletes are often prone to muscular tension and chronic pain related to repetitive movements and intensive training. Cupping helps release these tensions by stretching and decompressing muscle tissues.
This reduction in tension can decrease pain, improve muscle function, and allow for more effective training with less discomfort.
Improved Mobility and Range of Motion
Flexibility and range of motion are essential for athletic performance. Cupping therapy can help improve them by reducing muscular stiffness and tension in the connective tissues.
By promoting tissue release and relaxation, it enhances mobility, which is essential for sports movements requiring agility and speed.
Faster Muscle Recovery
Fast recovery is essential for athletes engaged in intensive training. Cupping therapy can help stimulate circulation and support the removal of metabolic waste from muscle tissues, thereby reducing inflammation and accelerating recovery.
This process allows a quicker return to training while limiting prolonged rest periods and reducing the risk of overtraining or injury.
Softening of Adhesions and Scar Tissue
Injuries can lead to the formation of adhesions and scar tissue, which may restrict mobility and cause pain. Cupping therapy helps soften these areas by improving circulation and promoting the mobilisation of the affected tissues.
This work helps restore a better range of motion and may also reduce the risk of re-injury.
Integrating Cupping Therapy into Sports Care in Montpellier
Athletes can integrate cupping therapy into their care routine to support recovery and muscle maintenance.
In Montpellier, this approach is particularly sought after by both amateur and competitive athletes participating in regular events such as the Montpellier Marathon, competitions held at Stade de la Mosson, as well as matches involving the MHR (Montpellier Hérault Rugby) and Montpellier Handball teams. It is also appreciated by runners, trail enthusiasts in the surrounding region, and gym practitioners following local competitions.
Cupping Massage in Montpellier: Book a Personalized Session
Your Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner in Montpellier
Certified in 2024 by the Chuzhen Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I continue to deepen my practice through ongoing training and continuous learning.
In 2025, I further developed my skills during a clinical Tuina internship at Shuguang University Hospital in Shanghai, a formative experience within a demanding and international environment.
Curious and committed to continuous development, I also explore complementary disciplines such as Ayurveda, meditation, yoga, breathwork, and tantra, as well as various approaches inspired by travel and personal development.
For me, personal transformation is an integral part of therapeutic practice: it brings greater presence, accuracy, and depth to every treatment.
A Personalized Chinese Massage Session
Before each Chinese massage session, a consultation is dedicated to a personalized energetic assessment based on the principles of TCM. This exchange helps better understand your needs, physical tension, emotional state, and certain lifestyle habits in order to adapt the treatment in a precise and individualized way.
The Chinese energetic assessment is based on three pillars:
- observation
- Interrogation
- palpation
I particularly observe posture, breathing, complexion, tongue, as well as the pulse and areas of tension through touch.
These elements make it possible to identify energetic imbalances and to adapt massage and cupping techniques according to your constitution and needs.
Mobile Massage in the Montpellier Area
For greater comfort, home massage sessions are also available in Montpellier and within a radius of approximately 20 km around the metropolitan area.
This option allows you to enjoy a personalised treatment in your own home, while benefiting from the same level of care and the same professional techniques as in a clinic setting.
It is particularly suitable for people with busy schedules, mobility difficulties, or those wishing to extend their moment of relaxation in their own environment.
